selfSCAPE Installation at A.P.T Gallery and Studios

Images of our rooftop installation at APT Gallery and Studios, Deptford funded by The Arts Council. The large-scale wooden sculptures are the culmination of workshops at APT Gallery involving the Redstarts, Cash Aspeek and Chris Marshall.

We looked at Henri Matisse's cut outs for inspiration and experimented with a variety of ideas around this theme incorporating the Redstarts' own self portraits. We produced a collection of work which was exhibited as part of SLAM at the end of January, including an educational event explaining the work and processes.

Cash and Chris worked with the Redstarts to investigate how the portraits could be simplified to enable fabrication and to explore how colour could be incorporated.

Once the eight foot high portraits were created in wood, the Redstarts set about finishing them to make them weatherproof. Coloured gels were inserted into some of the cut out shapes. Chris and Cash attached the portraits to steel supports and installed them onto the roof with the help of David Bloor.

The Redstarts will perform with Kristina Page and Cash on Wednesday 11th June. This will be filmed by Liz Harrison and posted on the Redstart Arts web site and social media platforms by the end of June.
